Artificial Intelligence (AI) Break Throughs
Googles AI Alpha Go Beats Worlds Best Human Go Player
Ke Jie is known as the worlds best human Go player, and lost 2 out of 3 games of Go against Googles artificial intelligence called AlphaGo on May 25 2017. Ke Jie first believed that a computer could never beat him, but now claims otherwise. Before AlphaGo played Ke Jie, it played Lee Sedol in a 5 game series in which it won 4 out of 5 games. AlphaGo played a move that at first was thought to be “a very strange move” and it is now considered one of the best moves in Go as of this writing (3/1/2018).
AlphaZero Beats The Worlds Best Chess-Playing Computer Program
AlphaZero (a repurposed AlphaGo) was able to defeat the worlds best chess playing computer program after learning how to play chess in just 4 hours. AlphaZero can now learn how to play other games in general. Unlike the worlds best chess playing program AlphaZero learned how to play chess with no human input. Note both AlphaZero and AlphaGo used a Machine Learning technique called deep learning.
AI Creates Better AI For Classifying Objects
Another Google AI from the researches at Google Brain announced the creation of an AI that can create it’s own AI called AutoML. AutoML uses a machine learning technique called reinforcement learning. When testing the AutoML child AI named NASNet against what researches call “the two most respected large scale academic data sets in computer vision” , the AI outperformed state of the art models build by humans. This could improve how computers see which would include self driving vehicles.
AI Better At Diagnosing Lung Cancer
In a study from Stanford university the researchers reported that their machine learning AI algorithm could classify specific tissues from slides that exhibit a specific type of cancer with better accuracy than the human epidemiologists.
AI Beats Top Poker Players
From January 11 to 31 2017 an AI called Libratus beat 4 top professional poker players in No -Limit Texas Hold’em specifically heads up no-limit Texas hold ‘em. The difference in this game compared to chess and Go is that in those games players know the exact state of the game at all times, in poker there is hidden information, you don’t know what cards your opponent is holding or if s/he is bluffing or not. This new AI has many implications for anything where the information is incomplete for example business negotiations, military strategy, cybersecurity, and medical treatment planning.
In July 2019, a poker bot, designed by researchers from Facebook’s AI lab and Carnegie Mellon University, has bested some of the world’s top players in a series of games of six-person no-limit Texas Hold ’em poker. You can read about it here.
Over 12 days and 10,000 hands, the AI system named Pluribus faced off against 12 pros in two different settings. In one, the AI played alongside five human players; in the other, five versions of the AI played with one human player (the computer programs were unable to collaborate in this scenario). Pluribus won an average of $5 per hand with hourly winnings of around $1,000 — a “decisive margin of victory,” according to the researchers.

AI Beats Lawyers
LawGeex put 20 experienced attorneys against an AI that was trained to evaluate contracts. The 20 participants were given 4 hours to highlight and identify 30 problems with 5 Non-Disclosure Agreements or NDAs. The AI was 94 percent accurate at identifying these mistakes while the attorneys were 85 percent accurate.
One thing is for sure artificial intelligence will be used increasingly in the future and will most likely improve and become more beneficial to humankind.
AI Makes Phone Calls For You (*UPDATE 5/12/18)
Google created an AI hyper-realistic sounding chatbot that will be able to make phone calls for you, and setup appointments. The chatbot sounded so realistic that the person on the other side of the phone call didn’t notice that she was talking to a machine when the AI was making an appointment for “Lisa”. The AI is so advanced that it even puts in “ums” in between it’s sentences and says “Mm-hmm” as well.

A.I. Can Now Create Fake Videos Of People From A Single Picture
Producing content for Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platforms like Coursera and EdX might be academically rewarding (and potentially lucrative), but it’s time-consuming — particularly where videos are involved. Professional-level lecture clips require not only a veritable studio’s worth of equipment, but significant resources to transfer, edit, and upload footage of each lesson.
That’s why research scientists at Udacity, an online learning platform with over 100,000 courses, are investigating a machine learning framework that automatically generates lecture videos from audio narration alone. They claim in a preprint paper (“LumièreNet: Lecture Video Synthesis from Audio“) on Arxiv.org that their AI system — LumièreNet — can synthesize footage of any length by directly mapping between audio and corresponding visuals.
There is a great book on machine learning called “Introduction to Machine Learning with Python” if you want to dig more into this subject.
